New programme starting 2026/27

The international degree course in Medicine & Surgery, taught in English, offers professional training to future doctors.

The degree course is run by the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, in Rome, in collaboration with the Autonomous Province of Bolzano and the South Tyrol Health Authority. It will be held at the Claudiana University Centre in Bolzano, where theory classes and workshops will be delivered, while clinical training will take place at various healthcare facilities belonging to the South Tyrol Healthcare Authority.

The course lasts six years. During this time, as well as studying the fundamental subjects required for practising medicine, students will also engage in a whole range of training and practical activities. There are 60 places available for each academic year (50 for EU nationals and 10 for non-EU nationals).

1. Career prospects

Upon completion of the programme, graduates will obtain a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. This degree is recognised as “qualifying”, as graduates will be qualified to practise in any area of the Italian National Health Service.

The professional qualification will also enable graduates to specialise in any medical field or to undertake specific training in general practice.



Degree recognition 

As it is a European qualification, graduates will be able to access the selection procedures for postgraduate study throughout the EU without any additional qualifications being required.

Regarding all non-EU contexts, any additional guidelines issued by the relevant country must be complied with.

Recognition or validity in the United States is subject to a number of variables and conditions, such as passing the USMLE (U.S. Medical Licensing Examination) Steps 1 and 2. Requirements may further vary depending on the individual state or even the specific receiving institution.

2. Curriculum

The Medicine & Surgery degree course comprises a total of 360 credits (CFUs), structured over six years of study (12 semesters). Of these, at least 60 must be gained through training activities aimed at developing specific professional skills.

Attendance is required. The course will be delivered in English.

Internship

During their internship, students will gain specific knowledge of internal medicine, general surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, and specialist medical and surgical disciplines.

Internships held at the healthcare facilities of the South Tyrol Health Authority will be conducted in German/Italian.

3. Admission process

Participation in the competition is subject to the online registration process set out in the public competition notice managed by the Cattolica University, in Rome.

The entire examination is administered remotely through a dedicated platform that allows real-time monitoring by proctors, as well as subsequent review via audio-video recordings of all stages of the process.

4. Tuition fees and scholarships

Tuition fees at the Cattolica University amount to € 18,000 per academic year.

Study grant from the Autonomous Province of Bolzano

Students holding a B2-level German-Italian bilingualism certificate issued by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano may apply for provincial funding, provided they commit to working for the South Tyrolean Health Service for four years within ten years of completing their subsequent specialist training or special training in general medicine.
